Yellow Exclamation Mark on a Drive in Windows: What It Means and How to Fix It

Check the state with manage-bde -status. Then either finish enabling BitLocker (recommended) or decrypt the drive with manage-bde X: -off.

Drive with a yellow warning icon in File Explorer

A yellow triangle on a drive in File Explorer looks alarming, but it rarely means hardware failure. On most PCs it means BitLocker encryption has been started but isn’t protecting the drive yet – often because Windows enabled device encryption automatically and is waiting for you to sign in with a Microsoft account or back up the recovery key.

Step 1 – Check the BitLocker status

Open Terminal (Admin) or Command Prompt (Admin) and run:

Command Prompt (Administrator)
manage-bde -status

Look at the affected drive. If Protection Status is Protection Off while Conversion Status shows encryption, BitLocker is waiting for activation – that’s the warning.

Step 2 – Choose a fix

Encryption protects your data if the laptop is lost or stolen. Back up the recovery key, then activate protection:

  1. Open Control Panel → BitLocker Drive Encryption (or Settings → Privacy & security → Device encryption).
  2. Choose Back up your recovery key – save it to your Microsoft account, a file on another drive, or print it.
  3. Select Turn on BitLocker / Resume protection for the drive.

Or from the command line, for drive D:

Command Prompt (Administrator)
manage-bde -protectors -add D: -RecoveryPasswordnmanage-bde -on D:

Write down the 48-digit recovery password the first command displays.

Option B: turn BitLocker off for the drive

If you don’t want encryption on that drive, decrypt it (replace D: with your drive letter):

Command Prompt (Administrator)
manage-bde D: -off
  • Your files are kept, but the drive becomes unencrypted – anyone with the disk can read it.
  • Decryption runs in the background and can take a while on large drives. Check progress with manage-bde -status.
  • The warning icon disappears when decryption finishes (refresh File Explorer or restart).

Business PCs

On company devices BitLocker is usually required by policy and managed by IT. Don’t turn it off – ask your administrator to complete the activation or escrow the recovery key.
