Robocopy Command Builder

Build a safe Robocopy command for migrations, mirrors and backups – multithreaded, with retries, logging and an optional dry run.

Runs in your browser – nothing is sent or stored.

Robocopy is the most reliable way to move file shares on Windows – it resumes, retries and can keep NTFS permissions. Its defaults are risky, though: a million retries per locked file, and /MIR deletes files without asking. Build a command with sensible switches, a log file and a dry run first.

Migrating a file server

  1. Run the dry run (/L) and read the summary.
  2. Run the real copy with permissions (/COPY:DATSOU) days before the cut-over.
  3. On the night, run it again – only changed files copy, so it’s quick.
  4. Switch users to the new share and keep the old one read-only for a week.

Frequently asked questions

Why does /MIR delete files?

Mirror makes the destination an exact copy of the source, so anything that exists only in the destination is removed. Always run it with /L first.
